Attention Realtors: Watch your social media mouth

In the world we live in today, it is quite easy to communicate with millions of people across the world within second. Thanks to social media and the internet, geographical boundaries can not limit communication.  That’s a lot of power!

However, with great power comes great responsibility.

You can’t just say anything to anyone at any time. Well technically, you can. But you shouldn’t.

The internet has a good memory, you may or may not remember what you said but your history will be available online. Your online trail speaks a lot about who you are as a person. And most people will look you up and evaluate you before they decide you’re worthy of their business or not. This is why it is imperative that you watch your social media mouth or you may find yourself losing business because of something you said months ago.

Don’t worry. It’s not really rocket science. Just avoid the common pitfalls and you’ll do just fine. Listed in this post are 5 Social media mistakes that realtors should avoid to maintain a good reputation online:

Bashing up Other Realtors

You may or may not like the Realtor next door, but it’s never a good idea to vent out your frustration on your public social media profile. Furious statements about your colleagues will speak a lot more about your character than the person you intended to bash.

Freedom of speech may be your right, but people are not likely to trust you if they see you using your freedom to abuse anyone else. Moreover, if your claims are untrue you may actually be breaking the law by defaming another agent. Trust me, you do not want to do that!

Making Racial/Political Statements

We’ve all heard a lot about freedom of speech being an important American virtue. While that’s true, it is important not to go overboard in the pursuit of freedom of speech, you should have a concern for the feelings of others around you. This is especially true if your business in highly dependent on strong relationship marketing.

While there’s no arguing that you’re entitled to your opinion, social media is not the place to express your view. As a realtor you should maintain the integrity of your business and your standpoint on any topic by keeping it to yourself and not posting it on social media.

Don’t SPAM

For realtors, it is extremely important to have strong client relationships. Most of the business realtors get is through referrals. Thus make sure your social media profile aims to strengthen your relationship to customers as opposed to spamming them with your listings 5 times a day.

If you post your listings too frequently, your followers may get annoyed and unfollow you. Thus keep your page interesting for your customers. Don’t just post your listings, post other entertaining stuff such as memes and funny videos as well.

Optimize your content to suit the customers that you are aiming to target.

Being Rude

Sometimes you will get bashed up for no reason by random trolls on social media. They will say stupid things that will make your blood boil. However, no matter how much they tempt you, do not lose your cool. If you think that things are going too far, just block those users from your page. Otherwise, just respond to them in a respectful manner. You can also message them privately to resolve the matter if the issue seems legit.

Never be rude to your followers on social media. People will judge you by what they see on your profile, you don’t want to come off as a jerk who couldn’t handle a little criticism.

Don’t be a Robot

When you’re conversing with your clients on social media, be yourself. Don’t become a robot that repeats the same lines over and over again. If you’ve hired someone else to manage social media, make sure they’re not just responding like an AI bot. Loosen up a bit, Converse with your followers on social media as you’ll converse with corporate friends.  They should feel like they’re talking to a person on the other side, not a bot. This will help strengthen the relationship between you and your customers.

 The Takeaway

While it’s important to have an active presence on social media, be careful not to get carried away with it. Post consistently, but be careful not to Spam too much. Post listings, but post humorous or interesting content as well that appeals to your clients. And most importantly, stay away from racial/ political topics, heated discussions, or complains about other realtors in the area.

Social media is a powerful tool it can help you win a lot of business, you just need to watch your mouth and play it smart. Treat your followers as potential clients that walked into your office, and you’ll do just fine!
